Personality:
Darcy Lewis had no idea that when she applied to be an intern for some female scientist that it would change her life so fundamentally. This was supposed to be a one-off summer thing that she did in order to prove to her parents (read: her father) that she could handle life in the real world - well in his idea of the real world. Her military father had floated in and out of her life since her mother divorced him when she was in middle school.
He's helping to pay for college and her political science major is a waste of time if she's not going to pursue anything of value with it. She's not intending on joining the service like he did and becoming a good little officer somewhere. She likes travel and she likes new places, so her major was a good step closer to maybe getting a job with the diplomatic corps. Her mother was of the opinion that college was an excellent way to find a good non-military husband and that it didn't matter about Darcy's major or her grades.
The fighting with her father started when she failed one of her core classes. It was one of the biology courses and it wasn't that she didn't know the answers, but that someone else was copying off her exam paper and the professor, when faced with a pretty faced and mostly empty headed non-bio major sophomore and one of his brightest students, he erred on the side of the biology major's over Darcy's. So did her father.
So she applied to every single internship she could even remotely qualify for. Jane Foster was the only one that accepted her and while Jane's specialties are so far out of the realm of what Darcy actually wants to do, she was determined to make it work. Also it had been a while since she'd been to New Mexico, though the last time they'd been in Albuquerque, not this tiny town.
She's emotional and a little impulsive, two things that her father will swear that she got from her mother, but she's also observant and attentive to details. She is the one who notices the anomaly first in the rearview mirror when Jane and Erik are arguing, she's the one to point out to the two scientists that there was a body in their pictures of the Einstein-Rosen bridge. She might not be able to grasp the equations behind it, but she often serves as both the comic relief and the voice of perspective for both Jane and Erik. She's used to travel and needing to be the one responsible for making sure that everyone is fed and has a place to sleep. She's also used to being ignored for long periods of time and needing to entertain herself. She's her father's daughter in that for all her quirkiness, she still shows up every day and works as long as Jane needs her to. She's someone that can be depended on, can be trusted not to screw up the coffee and food orders, to yell out when one of the machines is making a weird beeping noise, well weirder than normal.
She tells Jane that technically she thinks that Jane is responsible for hitting Thor the first time, because she doesn't want it to fall on her, because that means that she'll have to call home and if her mother finds out then her father will too and she doesn't want to give him any more "proof" that she can't hack it out here in the real world. She's determined to prove him wrong, she might sometimes play the giggling airhead, but she isn't actually one.
She also is the first person there to piece together that it's actually still plausible for people in primitive cultures to have revered Thor as a god, even if he isn't actually one (that they believe). The fact that SHIELD came in and took all of their stuff pisses her off, Jane worked hard for all of that and there was no need for them to come and take it. It really hurts that they took her IPod as well since that was one of the few birthday gifts that she'd gotten from her father in between deployments. It had been an actual gift that they'd purchased together rather than him simply handing her money. She's taken good care of that IPod over the years.
After the initial events in New Mexico, Darcy decides to stay with Jane and continue to be her assistant. Which means a lot of papers and independent study projects and online classes so that she can also finish her degree. It doesn't make her parents happy, but Darcy has something bigger and better to worry about than her parents at the moment. Jane is building a wormhole machine and someone has to help make sure that the scientist eats and drinks and showers on a regular basis. Jane needs her and that feeling is more addictive than Darcy ever really realized. Her parents have never needed her the way that Jane does and Darcy is fiercely protective of her scientist friend.
SHIELD pulls a lot of their funding once the wormhole machine fails but still keeps them on the books as employees, pulling strings here and there for Jane to give lectures and continue her research. Which leads to their sudden relocation to Norway, which neither Jane or Darcy could make sense of, until Darcy hacked through several firewalls and found the video of Thor in Manhattan and showed it to Jane. And that pisses her off more than she realized, that SHIELD can jerk them around like this, only interested in them when it seems like they'd be useful. Moving them across an ocean so that they won't be a distraction and yeah, New York totally needed saving and yeah, Thor was vital, blah blah blah. It still is a massively dick move on SHIELD's part and Darcy had thought that they'd already proved themselves before this. If they hadn't freaked out, hadn't been a distraction in New Mexico, then why would they be one in New York. They could have been helpful, for crying out loud, Jane moreso than her, but still, they're not shrinking violets to be guarded at all costs and coddled. There is no coddling in science.
They find Erik after she and Jane have realized what's gone down, and he tells them that Thor has already left (which Darcy had already figured but she'd still been hoping not for Jane's sake), but he still looks like several miles of hard bad road, so Darcy folds him into the Jane-sphere of needing someone to look after them. Darcy comforts Jane after that as all good girlfriends should, when Jane very clearly just gives up on Thor and tries to get on with her life. Doing that is what leads them to stay in Europe - they're already over here and there are more than enough opportunities for Jane to do what she does best. Then there's the day that one of Jane's customized gadgets starts beeping and Darcy does what every assistant should do, track her boss down and show her the beeping thing.
Granted the beeping thing led to her losing Jane first for five hours and then for a while after that, and that was the closest that Darcy has come to actually completely losing her shit since the day that her father had hung up on her and she'd started applying for internships anywhere but in Virginia. To the point that somewhere around hour two of Jane being missing the first time, she'd called first Erik and then SHIELD and then finally the actual British police.
The second time was worse, she spent an ungodly number of days calling every single number for evey single person she knew that might be able to help her track down her boss and then Erik was missing and there is a reason why Darcy is the assistant and not the boss because as long as she isn't the boss, she can keep her cool. Make her the boss and she's totally going to freak out of you, your dog, and everyone. Except it's not going to look like she's freaking out but she is. At least her intern kept her a little saner than if she'd been by herself, especially when it came to breaking Erik out of jail, and saving the world from even more evil aliens. Which boggles her mind, because seriously? Earth cannot be that cool. Stop trying to steal their shit and/or enslave all humanity.
When it comes to waking up in Teleios, Darcy is going to waver between being annoyed and thinking actually this is pretty cool. The city is rad and there are several very fine looking specimens for her to ogle as she pleases. It would be worse without Jane there but with Jane there, she's not going to have a lot of trouble settling in.
Though she totally expects an kidnapped by aliens merit badge for her superhero sidekick sash. Totally.
